Robert McCormick Sr.

Robert McCormick Sr., died Monday, June 1st, he was 87 years of age. Brother McCormick served as the Employment Director of the Joint Industry Board of the Electrical Industry from 1971 until his retirement January 31, 1994. Prior to serving as Employment Director he was the Industy’s first Apprentice Training Director, a post he held from 1961 till 1971.
Initiated into Local 3, IBEW in October 1942, his apprenticeship was interrupted from February 1943 until November of 1945 when he served in the United States Army during World War II.
Upon discharge, he returned to the industry and completed his apprenticeship. He worked as an “A” journeyman, project manager, estimator, high voltage cable splicer and apprentice school teacher until his appointment as Apprentice Training Director in November 1961.
Throughout his life he was committed to education both within the industry and without. Besides teaching apprenticeship school he taught high tension splicing to journeymen and attended Queens College for many years at night. He completed his studies for a Bachelors Degree at Empire State College, of the State University of New York in 1976.
Brother McCormick was known for his dedication to his assignment. He never took vacations by the week, but took long weekends during the summer months so he would not be away from the office for extended periods. He was always conscious of the grave responsibility he bore to insure members waiting for job assignments received them in as quick a manner as humanly possible.
Brother McCormick is survived by his wife Theresa and sons, Robert Jr., Christopher, Michael, John, all “A” journeyman, and Peter.
The officers, officials, staff and rank-and-file members extend their deep, heartfelt condolences to the McCormick family.
