Harry Van Arsdale Jr. Memorial Association Meets

On November 18, 2009 the directors of the Harry Van Arsdale Jr. Memorial Association held their annual meeting at the ­Electric Industry Center. The meeting was chaired by Association President John E. Marchell.
It was reported that the Association had sponsored two “Breakthrough Leadership Training Institute” seminars during the year, one of which was held here at Local 3 and was attended by fifty members. It was developed to encourage leadership and the honing of leadership skills among minority members of the Union. The Institute hosts similar seminars throughout the country at IBEW local unions and the Association, in recognition of Harry Van Arsdale Jr.’s work among the minority community thought it important that the Association support such endeavors in his name.
In addition to the Leadership Institute, the Association co-hosted the Women’s Conference that was held at Local 3 in October. That Conference highlighted the issue of sexual harassment in the workplace and what can be done when confronted with such behavior on the job.
Introduced at the luncheon was the 2009 Cornell intern, Thomas M. van Harren,  who authored the in-depth paper, “Lessons from a Champion of Labor” Harry Van Arsdale Jr. & the ‘Great Recession’.” The paper analyzed the strategies utilized by Van Arsdale throughout his career when confronted with what seemed like insurmountable obstacles and how they could be ­utilized in the present economic circumstances in which America finds itself since the ­economic collapse of 2008. The paper is available through the Memorial Association office at the Joint Industry Board.
The Association is committed to furthering the ideals of Harry Van Arsdale Jr. and insuring the values, integrity and principles exhibited by Van Arsdale throughout his life are passed on to new generations of trade union leaders.
